Nathaniel Clark Burt built his public career as a Presbyterian minister and religious writer whose addresses joined theology to civic questions. Born in 1825, he served American congregations and published sermons as well as longer works on Christian doctrine and pastoral life. National Character A Thanksgiving Discourse Delivered November 15th records an address given in 1855 at Philadelphia’s Franklin Street Presbyterian Church. Burt asks what makes a people a nation, considering ancestry, language, territory, government, and shared moral responsibility. He then treats national character as something shaped by collective choices rather than geography alone. The Thanksgiving setting gives the argument both ceremonial and practical force, since the sermon connects gratitude with public duty. Burt’s method is orderly and analytical, moving from definitions toward obligations that he believed applied to citizens and institutions alike. The surviving discourse offers a concise example of nineteenth-century American preaching addressed simultaneously to a congregation and to the political life surrounding it.
