Henry Norman Hudson taught, edited, served churches, and became a noted nineteenth century Shakespeare scholar. His annotated work culminated in the multivolume Harvard Shakespeare. Essays on Education, English Studies, and Shakespeare gathers educational and critical writing, including material first used as prefaces. Webster Centennial records his 1882 discourse commemorating Daniel Webster. During the Civil War, Hudson served as a Union chaplain under General Benjamin Butler. That difficult service informed A Chaplain’s Campaign With Gen. Butler and the later General Butler’s Campaign On the Hudson, closely related pamphlet forms connected with his confinement and criticism of military command. These works show the unusual range of his career, moving from classroom practice and Shakespeare editing to public commemoration, religious duty, wartime experience, and personal controversy. Hudson also edited periodicals for general readers.
