Nathaniel Holmes Bishop transformed long self-directed journeys into detailed geographical narratives about travel and small-craft navigation. As a young man he crossed South America on foot, later recounting that experience in The Pampas and Andes. Voyage of the Paper Canoe describes his 1874 and 1875 route from Quebec toward the Gulf of Mexico, a journey planned around connected rivers, canals, bays, and coastal passages. Bishop began in a wooden canoe but replaced it with the lightweight paper craft Maria Theresa, better suited to the demands of the route. The 1878 edition lists him as a corresponding member of the Boston Society of Natural History and the New York Academy of Sciences. Across the narrative, Bishop pays attention to navigation, portages, weather, settlements, and the practical limits of small boats. Bishop later continued this waterborne travel writing in Four Months in a Sneak-Box. Voyage of the Paper Canoe remains the work most closely associated with his experiments in portable craft and continental waterways.
