Henry David Inglis was a Scottish journalist, travel writer, and novelist who also published as Derwent Conway. A Personal Narrative of a Journey Through Norway, Part of Sweden records a wider Scandinavian route, while Solitary Walks Through Many Lands, by Derwent Conway foregrounds the pseudonym attached to his early travel writing. Switzerland, The South Of France, And The Pyrenees follows his 1830 continental tour, and The Channel Islands grew from two years of residence in the archipelago. A Journey Throughout Ireland. During The Spring, Summer, And Autumn Of 1834 combines an itinerary with observations on Irish towns, agriculture, society, and daily life. The New Gil Blas moves from travel narrative into fiction under the fuller title's Pedro of Pennaflor subtitle. Inglis repeatedly favored close description of routes outside the standard tourist circuit, using landscape, conversation, local institutions, and working life to give his journeys social as well as vivid scenic detail. His books also preserve the publication history behind Derwent Conway, the name under which several early editions reached readers.
