Nathaniel P. Langford was an explorer, public advocate, and member of the 1870 Washburn expedition through the Yellowstone region. The Discovery of Yellowstone Park preserves his journal of the party’s route along the Yellowstone and Firehole rivers, recording geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, wildlife, camps, and the practical difficulties of travel. Its firsthand chronology makes the book both an expedition narrative and an important document in the history of the landscape’s early federal protection. Langford later promoted Yellowstone through lectures and writing, and he became the park’s first superintendent after its establishment in 1872. The University of Nebraska Press returned the narrative to print through its Bison Books list, recognizing its continuing value to environmental and western history. In The Discovery of Yellowstone Park, Langford writes from within the surveying party rather than from distant recollection, allowing readers to follow how observation, wonder, and advocacy converged around a region that would become the world’s first national park.
