Neil Munro
Munro edited a Glasgow paper and wrote two entirely separate things. The Para Handy stories follow the crew of a Clyde puffer in Glasgow dialect, have never been out of print in Scotland, and were published under a pen name because their popularity mildly embarrassed him. The novels, among them John Splendid and Doom Castle, are serious Highland historical fiction and are what he wanted to be remembered for. His son was killed at Loos in 1915 and very little fiction followed. He is no relation to Alice Munro, who also appears here. He died in 1930.
