📚 3 Books ✍️ History 📄 PDF & EPUB

Henry Glassford Bell combined a legal career in Scotland with poetry, historical writing, and literary journalism. Educated in Glasgow and Edinburgh, he edited the Edinburgh Literary Journal before qualifying as an advocate, later serving for decades in Lanarkshire’s sheriff court. Life of Mary Queen of Scots presents Bell’s sustained defense of Mary in two volumes and became an early success, receiving a second edition and a French translation. Summer and Winter Hours gathers poetry, including work on Mary. My Old Portfolio; Or, Tales and Sketches is a separate 1832 collection drawn from Bell’s Edinburgh Literary Journal contributions. These books show the same writer moving between historical argument, verse, and imaginative prose rather than occupying a single genre. Bell’s literary friendships included James Hogg and John Wilson, but law eventually became his principal profession. His writing nevertheless remained tied to Scottish subjects, especially the contested reputation of Mary, whose life he treated both through historical advocacy and through poetry.
