Neon Yang trained in molecular biology and wrote science journalism in Singapore before fiction took over, publishing short stories from 2012 in Clarkesworld, Lightspeed and Strange Horizons. The Tensorate novellas, queer Asian science fantasy issued by Tor.com, began in 2017 with The Black Tides of Heaven and The Red Threads of Fortune, released on the same day, and carried on through The Descent of Monsters and The Ascent to Godhood. The Black Tides of Heaven was a Hugo and Nebula finalist in the novella category, and The Descent of Monsters made the Lambda shortlist. The Genesis of Misery, out in 2022, is Yang's first full-length novel and opens the Nullvoid Chronicles, retelling the story of Joan of Arc as a mecha space opera. Yang is non-binary and uses they and them, holds an MA in creative writing from East Anglia, and attended the Clarion West workshop in 2013. Earlier work appeared as JY Yang, including the Singaporean microfiction anthology The Ayam Curtain, co-edited with Joyce Chng in 2012; the legal change of name came in 2020.
