Nicola Griffith moves between historical fiction, science fiction, crime writing, essays and memoir. Raised in Yorkshire and later based in Seattle, she began her novel career with Ammonite and followed it with the Nebula-winning Slow River. Hild reconstructs seventh-century Britain around the early life of Hilda of Whitby, imagining the observation and political skill behind her rise as an adviser to King Edwin. Published in 2013, the novel received the Washington State Book Award for Fiction and became the opening volume of a sequence continued by Menewood. Griffith's other fiction includes the three Aud Torvingen novels and the Arthurian novella Spear. With Stephen Pagel, she edited the Bending the Landscape anthologies of fantasy, science fiction and horror. Her nonfiction includes a multimedia memoir and a data-based examination of bias in literary publishing. She holds a doctorate from Anglia Ruskin, founded the disability-literature conversation CripLit and co-hosted it with Alice Wong.
