Norman Lewis

1908–2003

Word Power Made Easy has been in print since 1949 and teaches vocabulary through etymology rather than through lists, on the reasoning that a Greek or Latin root unlocks twenty words instead of one.

Each session groups words by origin, then tests recall, then returns to them later, which is spaced repetition decades before anyone gave it a name.

Lewis taught English in New York and wrote several other instructional books. In South Asia particularly, the book has become a fixture of competitive exam preparation, which is not an audience he can have anticipated.
