Nujood Ali was married at ten in Yemen to a man in his thirties, and after two months of violence at his hands she took a bus to the courthouse in Sanaa on her own and sat there until a judge would hear her. She was granted a divorce in April 2008, which had not happened in that way before, and the case forced the minimum marriage age into Yemeni public argument. I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced was written with the French journalist Delphine Minoui. She has said publicly since that the money from the book did not reach her as intended and that her schooling was interrupted.
