Oxana Timofeeva
1978
Oxana Timofeeva writes philosophy at the meeting point of political theory, ecology, art, and relations between human and nonhuman life. Solar Politics is a compact essay that uses Georges Bataille’s ideas of solar economy and solar violence to reconsider capitalism, climate change, and collective life. Polity added the volume to its Theory Redux series in 2022. Timofeeva contrasts an extractive economy built on accumulation with the sun’s abundant expenditure of energy, then asks what political solidarity with nature might mean if nature is treated as neither master nor servant. She earned a doctorate in philosophy and has taught at the European University at St. Petersburg, worked as a researcher at Tyumen State University, and participated in the art collective Chto Delat. She also wrote The History of Animals and How to Love a Homeland. Solar Politics extends those interests by bringing metaphors of light, generosity, violence, and utopia into present debates about environmental crisis.
