Paul Ambroise Bigandet
Paul Ambroise Bigandet was a French Catholic missionary and bishop who drew on long service in Burma when studying Burmese religious traditions. The Life or Legend of Gaudama The Buddha of the Burmese (Volume I) presents an annotated English account derived from Burmese materials concerning the Buddha's life and teaching. Google Books credits Bigandet and records the work's nineteenth-century publication history, while Open Library catalogs the larger two-volume work and its subsequent editions. Bigandet wrote from a missionary perspective, so his interpretations reflect the assumptions and vocabulary of his period; his access to local texts nevertheless gave the book lasting value for historians of Buddhist studies and colonial-era scholarship. The annotations widen the narrative into discussions of customs, doctrine, and monastic life. Readers consulting The Life or Legend of Gaudama The Buddha of the Burmese (Volume I) encounter both a traditional sacred biography and evidence of how European scholars approached Burmese Buddhism in the nineteenth century.
