Katharine Berry Judson

Katharine Berry Judson assembled traditional narratives for Myths and Legends of California and the Old Southwest. Published by A. C. McClurg in 1912, the collection ranges across communities and landscapes in California, Arizona, and neighboring regions. Judson acts as compiler and editor rather than creator of the inherited stories, arranging accounts of origins, animals, natural features, ceremonies, and cultural memory for an English-language readership. Its contents also identify the communities from which individual narratives were gathered. Her introductory and organizational choices place many distinct traditions inside one regional volume, a method that makes the book useful while also reflecting the collecting practices of its period.
