Pearson McAdam Muir served as minister of Glasgow Cathedral and wrote from within the public religious debates of his period. Modern Substitutes for Christianity examines several systems that he believed attempted to occupy moral or intellectual ground once held by Christian belief. Its chapters address secularism, spiritualism, theosophy, Christian Science, ethical societies, and related movements, setting out their claims before presenting Muir's objections. A second edition appeared in 1912, identifying him as a royal chaplain as well as a cathedral minister.
