Pedro Fernandes de Queirós was a Portuguese navigator in Spanish service whose Pacific expeditions became central to European knowledge of the region. The Voyages of Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, 1595-1606 collects narratives and documents concerning journeys associated with Queirós, including the expedition that followed Álvaro de Mendaña and his later search for a great southern continent. The Hakluyt Society issued this two-volume English collection during 1904. Sir Clements Markham translated and edited the material, drawing together accounts by several historical participants rather than presenting a single continuous memoir by Queirós alone. That editorial structure gives readers multiple viewpoints on navigation, islands, encounters, command, and the ambitions behind Spanish exploration. Queirós appears as the collection's organizing figure, but the documentary record also preserves collaborators and witnesses. The Voyages of Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, 1595-1606 serves simultaneously as an exploration narrative and a later scholarly construction of scattered early modern sources.
