Polly Babbington

Polly Babbington begins a seaside relationship with an awkward misunderstanding in The Pretty Beach Thing. Lotta Button arrives in the English coastal town of Pretty Beach with an orderly life, a love of books, and little interest in becoming anyone's temporary distraction. Jack appears to offer exactly that kind of complication until a practical arrangement draws them into sustained contact. The novel opens Babbington's Lotta and Jack trilogy and is followed by The Pretty Beach Way and The Pretty Beach Life. Its setting connects libraries, village routines, friendship, and seasonal change to the pair's shifting expectations. Babbington writes within the larger Pretty Beach world, allowing recurring places and community ties to carry meaning across related stories. The Pretty Beach Thing establishes that continuity while giving Lotta a self-contained decision: she must judge Jack by what he does over time rather than by the role she initially assigns him.
