Richard Harding Davis was an American reporter, fiction writer, and playwright whose energetic accounts helped define the public image of the foreign correspondent at the turn of the twentieth century. Born in Philadelphia in 1864, he worked for several newspapers, served as managing editor of Harper’s Weekly, and reported from conflicts in Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Philippines. The Zone police draws on the American-administered Panama Canal Zone and follows officers whose discipline and personal histories shape their encounters there. Davis developed the material both as fiction and as a one-act play, with the dramatic version documented in 1914. His better-known books include Soldiers of Fortune, Gallegher and Other Stories, and Van Bibber and Others, while his journalism made him an influential witness to international events.
