Robert Elms
Robert Elms is a British writer and broadcaster whose work treats London as both a lived place and a changing cultural argument. After writing for the NME and The Face, he became a long-running BBC London presenter, bringing music, fashion, neighborhoods, and local memory into daily conversation. London Made Us: A Memoir of a Shape-Shifting City combines personal memoir with urban history. Elms moves from a childhood amid bomb-damaged streets to the capital's later cosmopolitan life, connecting family stories, clubs, radio, architecture, and street culture to wider transformations. The book appeared from Canongate during 2019, and its structure reflects a broadcaster's ear for voices as well as a memoirist's attention to place. Elms also wrote The Way We Wore, a history of British style grounded in personal experience. Across both books, London is not merely a backdrop: it shapes identity, taste, work, and the stories residents tell about themselves.
