Brianna Holt
Brianna Holt works across reporting, screenwriting, and cultural criticism, examining race, gender, popular culture, and the language used to frame Black women’s lives. Her journalism has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, GQ, The Cut, The Atlantic, and Complex. In Our Shoes, published by Plume in 2023, is her first book. Blending memoir, cultural criticism, reporting, and interviews, its nine chapters address subjects including hair, skin tone, workplace expectations, appropriation, medical misinformation, and the demand that Black women fit narrow social roles. Holt’s personal experiences sit alongside the perspectives of other women and specialists, making the book both individual testimony and a broader inquiry into recurring stereotypes. Her reporting background is central to that structure: she moves between cultural examples, lived detail, and explanatory context. The result extends her magazine work into a sustained argument for listening to differences within Black womanhood rather than treating one experience as universal.
