Michael Jordan: The Life, published by Little, Brown in 2014, drew on nearly thirty years Roland Lazenby had spent around its subject, first covering him at North Carolina and then through the Chicago Bulls championship seasons, plus interviews with Jordan's coaches, family and teammates. Chicago Public Library named it among the best books of that year. Lazenby grew up in Wytheville, Virginia, took his degree at the Virginia Military Institute and a master's at Hollins University, and teaches in the communication department at Virginia Tech. He has produced more than fifty sports books, including Jerry West: The Life and Legend of a Basketball Icon and Showboat: The Life of Kobe Bryant, and co-wrote Hoos 'n' Hokies with Doug Doughty.
