Roy Baumeister
1953
Willpower argued that self-control runs on a finite resource that depletes with use and is partly restored by glucose, an idea called ego depletion that dominated social psychology for two decades.
Large replication attempts have since failed to reproduce the effect, and the glucose element in particular is now widely regarded as unsupported. Baumeister has defended the underlying phenomenon while conceding ground on the mechanism, and the dispute is one of the central cases of psychology's replication crisis.
Read it as an important and now heavily qualified book. The practical advice about habits and environment survives better than the theory it was built on.
