Sally Hinchcliffe
Sally Hinchcliffe writes fiction shaped by landscape, uncertainty, and the uneasy stories communities tell about themselves. Hare House sends an unnamed former teacher from London to a remote Scottish estate after an unexplained incident ends her school career. Renting a cottage, she becomes involved with her landlord and his younger sister while local accounts of witchcraft, clay figures, and disturbed animals make ordinary explanations increasingly difficult to trust. Winter weather eventually isolates the estate and intensifies the tension between psychological suspicion and the possibility of the supernatural. Mantle published the hardback in January 2022, and Pan issued the paperback in September that year. Hinchcliffe is also known for Out of a Clear Sky and has worked with Cycling UK, a role consistent with her close attention to rural environments. Hare House avoids resolving every strange event too quickly. Its moorland setting, narrow social circle, and guarded narrator keep the novel balanced between modern gothic fiction and a study of guilt.
