Sara Flannery Murphy
1984
Sara Flannery Murphy writes speculative novels about identity, power, and communities built around extraordinary claims. Girl One follows Josephine Morrow, the first of nine children said to have been conceived without male genetic material at an experimental Vermont commune. When her mother disappears, Josephine searches for the other women raised beside her and begins reassessing the origin story that defined them. Farrar, Straus and Giroux released Girl One in 2021. Murphy grew up in Arkansas, studied library science in British Columbia, and earned an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis. Her bibliography also includes The Possessions and The Wonder State, works that similarly bring uncanny premises into intimate relationships and carefully rendered places.
