Sheila O'Flanagan spent her first career in finance, rising to chief dealer at the Central Bank of Ireland, trading foreign currency, bonds and options. Dreaming of a Stranger, her debut, appeared in 1997 and became an Irish bestseller, and she has since published more than twenty novels, three story collections and two books for younger readers. All for You took the Popular Fiction prize at the Irish Book Awards in 2011. Her Husband's Mistake (2019) begins with Roxy arriving home unannounced to find her husband Dave in bed with the single neighbour, then follows what a woman who thought her marriage settled decides to do next. Alongside the fiction O'Flanagan has written a column for the Irish Times, played badminton at competition level and served on the board of the Irish Sports Council.
