Stephanie Dray
1971
Dray writes American history from inside the women's lives usually summarised in a clause. My Dear Hamilton, with Laura Kamoie, is Eliza Schuyler Hamilton across fifty years, including the half-century she spent after her husband died protecting his papers and building an orphanage. America's First Daughter is Martha Jefferson, who burned her father's letters. Lily of the Nile is earlier and follows Cleopatra Selene, Cleopatra's daughter, raised in Rome by the man who destroyed her family. Dray trained as a lawyer and worked in government before this.
