Susan Morrow Jones

Susan Morrow Jones (1864-1926) was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and published almost everything she wrote under a pen name, most often S. Carleton, an initial that let readers assume a man had written the book. Between 1900 and 1925 she brought out around fifteen novels plus a steady run of magazine fiction, among them A Girl of the North, The Lame Priest and Out of Drowning Valley. She also wrote as Helen Milecete, a name she appears to have shared with her sister, and as Carleton-Milecete. Her settings are mostly Canadian backcountry, and the supernatural streak in stories like The Lame Priest, a werewolf tale from 1901, has kept her in weird-fiction anthologies long after the novels went out of print.
