Syd McGee runs the business side of Studio McGee, the interior design firm he started with his wife Shea in 2014 after her Instagram record of their own house renovation drew a following. As CEO he handles hiring, budgets and the day to day operation, while Shea leads the design work. The couple sold that first house, put the money back into the company and moved from Southern California to Salt Lake City; an online furnishings brand, McGee and Co., followed in 2016. Dream Home Makeover began on Netflix in October 2020, ran four seasons and drew a Daytime Emmy nomination for instructional and how-to programming. Make Life Beautiful, which Syd wrote with Shea and Harper Horizon published in 2020, is their joint account of building the company and what it asked of them as partners and parents. It became a national bestseller.
