Taffy Brodesser-Akner
1975
Taffy Brodesser-Akner moves between long-form journalism and fiction about status, marriage and the versions of themselves people present to others. Fleishman Is in Trouble, her first novel, begins with newly separated physician Toby Fleishman and gradually shifts the frame through which his marriage to Rachel is understood. Random House released it in 2019, and the novel reached the National Book Award longlist. Brodesser-Akner adapted the work as a limited television series, serving as writer, showrunner and executive producer. She is a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine, which publishes her profiles and reporting. The novel brings that observational precision to multiple perspectives rather than leaving its opening account unchallenged.
