Taras Shevchenko

Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) was a Ukrainian poet and painter born into serfdom and freed only as a young man. His collection Kobzar laid a foundation for modern Ukrainian literature, and his verse against tsarist rule brought him arrest, exile, and lasting reverence as a national symbol.
