Timothy D. Snyder
1969
Snyder is a Yale historian of Central and Eastern Europe who works in a great many of its languages. Bloodlands counted the fourteen million civilians killed by the German and Soviet regimes in the same stretch of territory between 1933 and 1945, and insisted the two be studied together; historians who disagreed said that framing softens what was specific about the Holocaust, and the argument is still live. On Tyranny is twenty short lessons written in the weeks after the 2016 American election, barely a hundred pages, and it has sold in the millions. He lectured on Ukrainian history to an enormous online audience after the 2022 invasion. Our Malady came out of a near-fatal illness of his own and is about American hospitals.
