Tom Sleigh
Tom Sleigh is a poet, essayist, and translator whose version of Herakles brings Euripides into direct contemporary English. Oxford University Press released the work in 2001 within its Greek Tragedy in New Translations series. Classicist and composer Christian Wolff supplied a literal rendering as guidance, then wrote the introduction, notes, and glossary. Sleigh shaped the English translation around poetic rhythm and the play's abrupt changes in tone. His flexible lines follow sudden reversals in mood and thought, using different rhythmic bases for speeches and choruses. The edition serves general readers and students who do not know Greek while retaining the drama's disjointed movement and troubling moral pressure. Herakles also sits naturally beside Sleigh's poetry, where public power, private grief, and uncertainty often meet. The collaborators held distinct responsibilities: Sleigh composed the translation, while Wolff's preparatory rendering and scholarly material supplied linguistic and dramatic context.
