William MacHarg developed detective and mystery fiction in close collaboration with Edwin Balmer during the early twentieth century. Little, Brown and Company issued The Blind Man’s Eyes in 1916; it places the perceptive lawyer Basil Santoine inside a railway mystery involving Philip Eaton and a concealed past. The Indian Drum followed in 1917 through Little, Brown and Company, with a frontispiece by W. T. Benda. That novel turns the unexplained fate of the Lake Michigan freighter Miwaka into a story about memory, inheritance, and Great Lakes lore. Both books carry the MacHarg and Balmer bylines, making their partnership essential to the works’ identity. MacHarg also collaborated with Balmer on the Luther Trant stories, which used psychological detection as an organizing idea. The Blind Man’s Eyes and The Indian Drum show the pair working at a larger scale, combining investigative structure with distinctive settings. One moves between a train and a household mystery; the other builds atmosphere from shipping history, storms, and the imagined warning of a distant drum.
