About this book

The story opens on the late night of August 26, 1776. Nine thousand Continental soldiers are camped on Brooklyn Heights with their backs to the East River. The Marylanders grumble about Old Uncle Putnam, who rides about in his shirt sleeves and a dirty leather jacket, and ask why Washington has not put a military man in command. The New Englanders posted in the timbered hills say that Howe is afraid, remembering Bunker Hill, and wonder where Washington is.

Washington is across the East River in New York town, watching. He has told Putnam to keep an eye on the Jamaica road. Ernest Haycox also follows a column of soldiers into the woods, where Alex Carroll mutters about the order to close up. Other passages bring Sergeant Cotton into hand-to-hand fighting in a glade, with Carroll calling out encouragement beside him.
