About this book
On the banks of the Alabama River in autumn 1814, Sam Hardwicke commands a company of boys determined to join General Jackson. They have elected him captain, but Jake Elliott challenges his authority before they reach the army camp. George Cary Eggleston builds this historical adventure around the demands of leadership: Sam must keep order, find food and answer for the conduct of his young companions as they march through swamps and canebrakes.
Camp life supplies much of the story's practical interest. In one episode, the boys build a shelter from leaves, moss and bushes, while Sam explains how a drainage trench dries the sandy ground beneath them. His younger brother Tom and the other boys press him to explain his decisions, mixing curiosity with jokes about their rough surroundings. Readers interested in outdoor resourcefulness and stories of young people facing adult responsibilities will find both in this War of 1812 tale.
