About this book
A Brief History of Element Discovery, Synthesis, and Analysis, by Glen W. Watson, concerns the discovery, synthesis and analysis of elements. The text says only 88 naturally occurring elements had been discovered up until 1939, and attributes the synthesis of the most recently discovered elements to a technique based on the cyclotron.
The historical discussion describes the early Greeks' proposal that earth, air, fire and water were the essential material from which everything else was made. The account of trials by Fermi and his co-workers reports evidence of electron expulsion with at least four different rates of decay. The discussion records claims for the creation of elements 93 and 94 and possibly further elements, while noting much difficulty in proving the activity's origin.
