About this book
Questions of timber supply, ownership and industry shape B. E. Fernow’s account of how forest management developed. The revised edition dates from 1911, and the work began as lectures for forestry students at Yale. Chapters cover forest policy, planting, administration, education and technical practice across Europe, the United States and other countries. Germany receives especially detailed treatment because Fernow found more historical sources for its forestry practices.
In the section on Russia, restrictions on cutting serve the demand for shipbuilding timber, while planting requirements and changes in property rights affect woodland conditions. These examples connect decisions about forests with wider economic needs. Fernow argues that historical experience matters in a field where the results of work can take generations to become clear. His prefaces also explain the compiled sources and acknowledge the limitations of the statistics. Readers interested in environmental history can use this survey to examine how governments and landowners approached forest use and renewal.
