About this book
Manual of Ship Subsidies is a book by Edwin M. Bacon. The preface says the intent of the book is to furnish in compact form the history of the development of the ship subsidies systems of the maritime nations of the world. The preface calls the book a manual of facts and not of opinions. The contents, among other chapters, list ones headed “GREAT BRITAIN,” “FRANCE” and “THE UNITED STATES.”
The book says Cromwell's act was confirmed by Charles II in 1660 and made the basis of the code which her statesmen then exalted as “The Great Maritime Charter of England.” A summary list gives, for Japan, “State aid to steamship companies; mail subsidies; construction and navigation bounties; fisheries bounties.”
