About this book

An aeroplane crashes over a London garden and a man dies, and from that shocking opening Oliver Onions builds a mystery that keeps its secrets close. The young artist Philip Esdaile is drawn into the aftermath, where witnesses, half-truths, and the odd angle of what people actually saw all matter. Onions, better known today for his eerie ghost stories, brings the same patient control here, favoring atmosphere and psychology over easy answers. The puzzle turns less on a detective's cleverness than on how ordinary people reconstruct a violent event they only glimpsed. It rewards readers who like their crime fiction thoughtful and a little unsettling. A free PDF and EPUB edition is available to download.
