About this book

At a comfortable English country house, the master's disreputable brother arrives from Australia and, minutes later, is found shot dead in a locked office. The host has disappeared, and suspicion settles quickly. Antony Gillingham, a genial visitor with a knack for noticing what others overlook, decides to play detective, roping in his friend Bill as an eager Watson. Together they test theories, poke holes in alibis, and turn up a hidden passage and a case of mistaken identity. Milne, far better known for Winnie-the-Pooh, wrote only this one detective novel, and its light touch and fair-play plotting made it a favorite of the golden age of crime fiction. A. A. Milne

Milne was an assistant editor at Punch and a successful playwright before the bear, and he spent the remainder of his life mildly resenting what the bear did to that reputation. Winnie-the-Pooh appeared in 1926 and The House at Pooh Corner in 1928, both drawn by E. H.
