About this book

A Complete Edition of the Works of Nancy Luce gathers the poems and writings of Nancy Luce (1814-1890), the eccentric Martha's Vineyard woman who lived alone with her beloved hens, wrote poems mourning them, and sold her verses and photographs to curious visitors. Her strange, sincere writing has made her a folk figure of the island, and her grave still draws offerings of plastic chickens. The collection preserves a wholly original American voice.
