About this book

A Field Study of the Kansas Ant-Eating Frog, Gastrophryne olivacea is by Henry S. Fitch, and its contents list names Habitat, Behavior, Temperature Relationships and Breeding, among others. The study says nearly all ant-eating frogs seen on the Reservation have been caught and examined and individually marked, with 1215 individuals recorded and a total of 1472 captures by November 1, 1954. The data represent six consecutive years, 1949 through 1954, and serve to supplement those obtained by Freiburg.

By mid-October, six weeks after metamorphosis, the frogs had increased in over-all length by approximately 50 percent, having grown a little more than 1 mm. per week on the average. Each of several frogs was found consistently under the same rock for periods of weeks, while the hundreds of other marked frogs were rarely found twice in any one spot. Of those caught in two or more different years only 15 per cent were shown to have moved more than 400 feet.
