About this book

Winter in Whinburn means dirty snow, factory smoke and another bout of bronchitis for fifteen-year-old Mavis Ramsay. A parcel of flowers from Devonshire gives her a vivid glimpse of a gentler climate, where violets and primroses bloom in December. She longs to visit the place they came from and regain her health. Her younger sister Merle brings a very different energy into the bedroom: confident, physically stronger and full of complaints and stories from school.

Angela Brazil's schoolgirl novel pairs the sisters' close friendship with an interest in gardens and family life. A fairy tale introduces Nancy, a mother who bargains with a pixie to recover her stolen child, amid flowers that change shape and sea-birds that become dancers. Readers drawn to older children's fiction will find sharply contrasted personalities, lively conversation and an imaginative world of flowers and local folklore.

About the author

Angela Brazil

Angela Brazil was one of the first British writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories", written from the characters' point of view and intended primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. In the first half of the 20th century she published nearly 50 books of girls' fiction, the vast majority being boarding school stories.
