About this book

Madam Trimleston and Nurse Nancy await the children's Christmas return with a mixture of affection and alarm. Ten-year-old Terry and her younger brother Turly have grown up in Africa and now spend their holidays at their grandmother's house in Ireland, between the hills and the sea. School has raised hopes of quieter behaviour, until Terry arrives holding the reins of a horse and car, followed by cheering children.

The family comedy turns on Terry's energy and the adults' expectations of a well-behaved young lady. An outing to fetch fresh eggs leads her into fog and leaves her pony with injured knees. Turly follows on a donkey, and Terry's concern for the animal shares the scene with her wish to provide her grandmother's breakfast. Rosa M. Gilbert's children's novel offers sibling adventures, anxious grown-ups and a close look at the trouble that good intentions can cause.
