About this book

A Hilltop on the Marne is by Mildred Aldrich and is described as being letters written June 3-September 8, 1914. A note to the tenth impression says the author wishes to apologize for the constant use of the word English in speaking of the British Expedition to France. The note says everything in khaki was spoken of as English, even though they knew perfectly well that Scotch, Irish, and Welsh were equally well represented in the ranks.

The writer describes Mareuil-on-the-Marne, lying just halfway between the writer and Meaux, with its red roofs, gray walls, and church spire. As the writer's party approaches the officers, the writer leans forward and says Beg your pardon, but by the time they realise they have been addressed in English the party has passed. A man stops at the library door, looks in, and says "This is nice", and asks if he might take the liberty of inviting some of his fellow officers to come into the garden and see the view.
