About this book
The book gathers letters from Amy Owen Bradley, identified as a motor driver for the American Fund for French Wounded. A letter recounts a motor journey from Paris that took nineteen hours, with arrival at half past two in the morning. The journey's last stretch was made in pitch darkness and rain.
The letter writer describes watching from a hotel doorway as two bombs dropped in a distant part of the town. The account says the bombs struck two houses without causing any loss of life inside them. A doctor reports going over three times in one day, taking a third of his stretcher bearers with him on each occasion. The doctor's account says that snipers shoot at the unarmed bearers while they dress the wounded, despite their Red Cross arm bands.
