About this book
The preface says an added part covers commerce during the war and the two or three years of peace immediately following. The account of the fairs describes most trading as the work of merchants from France and Flanders and Italians crossing the Alpine passes. The account attributes the decline of the Champagne fairs to heavier dues, direct royal control, wars diverting merchants, and the growth of sea-trade.
The English fairs are described as less important and, in most cases, as not attracting merchants from distant countries. Stourbridge Fair is identified as the largest English fair, held about a mile from Cambridge in a position suited to trade and distribution. The account of English free trade explains that import duties remain, restricted to a very few commodities and serving revenue rather than protection.
