About this book
The author's preface presents the history of trade unionism partly as a summary of collaborative work in labor history and partly as an attempt to carry that work further. The account says that, except during a brief but damaging agrarian episode, the demand for free public education occupied the foreground of the workingmen's movement. The account says the workingmen's stratagem apparently worked, since employers immediately dropped the issue of extending the working day.
John Jarrett argues before a committee for an incorporation law solely for its effect on conciliation and arbitration. The discussion of class parties says established parties countered them with the charge that they tended to incite class against class.
