About this book
R. W. Browne's A History of Roman Classical Literature was printed at Philadelphia in 1853. The title page names the author as Prebendary of St. Paul's and Professor of Classical Literature in King's College, London, and carries a line from Cicero's Tusculan Disputations. The preface says that this literature, though it includes many illustrious writers and many voluminous works, falls within a period of less than four centuries.
The chapter on Horace is headed by a list of topics: his villa at Tivoli and Sabine farm, the site of the Bandusian fountain, the subjects of his satires and epistles, the beauty of his odes and his imitations of Greek poets. Browne calls Horace the representative of Roman refined society, as Virgil is of the national mind. Another passage says that Quintilian could not appreciate Catullus, and numbered footnotes give classical references throughout.
