About this book
The Grandeur That Was Rome: A Survey of Roman Culture and Civilisation is by J. C. Stobart. The text says that it was upon a new condition of things that Augustus had the wisdom to build his monarchy. The text says the army was greatly reduced at once, and that the foreign hirelings who had served as a bodyguard were replaced by native soldiers.
The text says that, acting merely as one of the two consuls and in obedience to a law passed through the senate and comitia, Augustus restored the depleted ranks of the patrician order. A list of illustrations describes the emblems captured in Jerusalem being carried in triumph at Rome, among them the seven-branched candlestick, the table for the show-bread and the Sacred Trumpets. A further illustration shows, on the left, the Romans, in testudo formation, attacking a Dacian fortress.
